Yet another injury…..

Most of the time this maniac English Pointer Mix provides me with entertainment with his craziness. His excitement makes me smile and I enjoy seeing him so happy.
Yesterday, however, his excitement resulted in a loss of normal common sense. This boy took off to play and run at the school but managed to slam head on into Paul and a big Metal Fence Post. His brain stopped thinking long enough to forget that he can’t run right through people and/or big metal posts. The impact was hard enough that he ended up coming over (but not after running around for a good couple minutes of freedom) and holding a paw up in the air and then ultimately limping on a rear leg too. I was concerned he wouldn’t be in condition to walk home from the park but he seemed to do okay with a slight limp. Some arnica and some rest yesterday evening and I did see some great improvement.
He’s still limping a bit in the rear but I am not seeing him favor either paw in the front. Some dogs are so good at disguising their injuries though! We missed yet another flyball practice and today is his day to hang out with Paul and I asked that he keep him home today. He really should be resting until I figure out what we are doing about his injury for sure.
I think he’s likely just sore. I’ve been giving him some arnica twice a day and stepped up his fish oil dosage thanks to the advice of my great friend at Puppenschnoodles. I also made a call to the vets office this morning and am waiting for a return call with advice about how to best help him heal from this injury.
I’m wondering if Dylan will ever slow down enough to really have enough patience to stop and think “I can’t run through metal so maybe I ought to wait my turn to go through this entrance.” Maybe he’s just destined to be a lunatic who just can’t wait for his chance to run and have lots of fun! His body is aging and it’s not always going to bounce back from his silly injuries like it has in the past. Hopefully he’s still young enough that he will heal quickly this time around. We have a tournament in a few weeks and he’ll need to be in good shape to run!
That is a VERY cool shot. Hope he heals up fast!
